“Bethany Church sacristy birthed a college.” Does that sound like a riddle? It is not. It is a piece of Bethany Lutheran Church’s history. Today we will explore the story of Bethany Lutheran Church. It is more than just a building. It is a landmark of faith.
Bethany Lutheran Church stands as a testament to community. It embodies faith in the heart of New York City. But, its roots stretch back to the dreams of Swedish immigrants. These immigrants yearned for a place to worship. They longed to hear God’s word in their own language.
The Swedish Evangelical Bethany Church emerged from a humble meeting in 1869. A small group gathered. They wanted to create their own church. From this small start, a congregation grew. They gathered to praise and witness God. They believed in Jesus Christ.
Bethany Lutheran Church’s story continued. In 1874, they erected their first building. It was made of native sandstone. The church owned 80 acres. The building expanded in 1880. It included a steeple and balcony. They even purchased a pipe organ.
Bethany Lutheran Church played host to significant events. The Augustana Synod conventions were held here. This happened in 1881, 1892, 1904, 1919, and 1939. The Augustana Woman’s Missionary Society organized at a synod meeting in 1892 at Bethany Church.
In 1881, Bethany Academy was founded in Bethany Church sacristy. Later it became Bethany College in 1887. Lindsborg’s first performance of Handel’s “Messiah” was held in Bethany Church in 1882.
The church underwent renovations in 1904. They added north and south transepts. Stained glass windows were installed. A new pipe organ was added. The altar was hand-carved. Sandzen and Malm paintings graced the front of the sanctuary.
Weekday Church School began in 1923. A two-story brick parsonage was built in 1928. It cost $14,500. English first appeared in congregational minutes in 1934.
In 1952, they erected an education building. It was called the Christian Life Center. It cost $160,000. A Boy Scout Troop organized in 1958. Bethany Church sponsored it. It continues to this day.
The Archives Committee was appointed in 1986. They translated and preserved historical records. New offices and meeting rooms were built in 1995. They connected the sanctuary and Christian Life Center. In 1997, a new Jaeckel tracker organ was installed.
