This isn’t just another research center. The National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos is a hub of innovation. It employs over 1,000 brilliant minds. Researchers, engineers, technicians, and administrative staff all contribute.
Founded in July 1961 the National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos was originally named Research Centre for Nuclear Research Demokritos. It was named to honor the ancient Greek philosopher Democritus. In 1985, it gained self-governing status. It broadened its scope beyond nuclear research.
The National Center for Scientific Research Demokritos now covers many scientific and engineering fields. Its campus spans 150 acres. This includes many buildings. They cover about 35.000 m2. You will find it in Aghia Paraskevi. This is ten kilometers from Athens center, near Hymettus mountain.
Let’s explore the six institutes that drive its research.
First, there is the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications. Next is the Institute of Biosciences and Applications. The Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics is also important. So is the Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology. Then we have the Institute of Nuclear Radiological Sciences and Technology, Energy and Safety. Finally, there’s the Institute of Quantum Computing and Quantum Technology.
Notably, the Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics houses Greece’s only nuclear reactor. It is a 5 MW research reactor.
One of the center’s significant contributions is the DETRACT atmospheric dispersion modeling system. The Environmental Research Laboratory developed it. This system models air pollution dispersion over complex terrain.
The Media Networks Laboratory pioneered the first digital television platform in Greece. This supported fully interactive services.
