A prominent figure observes us from his marble pedestal. This is the Mihail Cantacuzino Statue. It stands as a testament to a man who shaped Bucharest’s history. The Mihail Cantacuzino Statue, crafted from Carrara marble by Karl Storck, was the first statue erected in Bucharest. It was unveiled between 1865 and 1869. It depicts Mihai Cantacuzino, a significant historical figure. He was a grand steward of Wallachia in the late 17th century. Mihai Cantacuzino is best known for founding the Colțea Monastery and Hospital. This hospital, established in 1704, was Bucharest’s first. The statue is located near the very hospital Cantacuzino founded. This proximity connects the man to his enduring legacy. Cantacuzino’s life was not without its share of drama. His father, Constantin Cantacuzino, was assassinated in 1662. Young Mihai was then compelled to continue his education abroad in Padua. He later played a crucial role in the siege of Vienna in 1683. This was during the reign of his brother, Șerban Cantacuzino. Mihai Cantacuzino established the Sinaia Monastery between 1690 and 1695. He also played a key role in the political ascension of his nephew, Constantin Brâncoveanu. This began a complex relationship marked by both alliance and rivalry. Sadly, Cantacuzino’s life ended tragically in 1716. He was executed in Constantinople amidst political intrigue. The Mihail Cantacuzino Statue serves as a powerful reminder of his contributions to Bucharest. It represents the intersection of faith, medicine, and political history.
