Theodor Aman Museum is more than just a museum. It is a journey into the world of a remarkable artist. The museum is housed in the very building that was once Theodor Aman’s home and workshop. This beautiful building was constructed in 1868. It is located on C. A. Rosetti Street. The location is between the Romanian Athenaeum and the Memorial of Rebirth.

Theodor Aman designed the house himself. He created the architectural plans, exterior decorations and interior design. Karl Storck collaborated with Theodor Aman on the exterior decorations. Inside you’ll find mural paintings, stained glass and stucco ceilings. Theodor Aman also crafted the wooden paneling and furniture.

Theodor Aman Museum opened in 1908. It is one of Romania’s oldest memorial museums. The house retains its intimate atmosphere. It evokes the Belle Époque period. The museum holds a significant collection of Theodor Aman’s works.

Theodor Aman was a versatile artist. His paintings cover various genres. He created landscapes, still lifes and nudes. He also painted battle scenes and seascapes. A unique aspect of the museum is its collection of studio scenes. These paintings offer a glimpse into Theodor Aman’s creative process. They show that the objects he painted still exist in the museum.

Aman’s family name was not originally Aman. His father Dimitrie Dimo was a merchant. He traded with Turks from Vidin. Because he often extended credit the Turks called him “Aman”. Aman means “mercy” or “compassion” in Turkish. Dimitrie Dimo eventually adopted this nickname as his surname.

Theodor Aman’s artistic talent extended beyond painting. He was also a sculptor and engraver. He carved much of the furniture in the house. He also created the wooden decorations. You can see his engraving press in the room dedicated to his engravings. Theodor Aman also played the cello. He hosted musical evenings accompanied by his stepdaughter Zoe. She sang and played the piano.
