Hurva Synagogue

Why is this majestic synagogue called “The Ruin”? We are standing before the Hurva Synagogue, a beacon of Jewish resilience in the heart of Jerusalem’s Old City. The name “Hurva”, meaning “The Ruin,” speaks volumes about its tumultuous past. First envisioned by Rabbi Yehuda HeHasid in the 18th century, the Hurva Synagogue faced numerous setbacks. Financial woes and opposition from local authorities plagued its early construction. Finally completed in 1864, the Hurva Synagogue became the pride of Jerusalem’s Jewish community. Its magnificent dome soared above the city, a testament to Jewish perseverance. Sadly, this golden era was short-lived. During the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, the Hurva Synagogue was tragically destroyed, leaving behind a poignant symbol of loss. For decades, only a solitary arch remained, a stark reminder of the synagogue’s former glory. But the story of the Hurva Synagogue is ultimately one of hope and renewal. In 2010, after years of meticulous planning and reconstruction, the Hurva Synagogue was reborn. Today, its magnificent sanctuary, with its intricate details and soaring ceilings, once again serves as a place of prayer, study, and gathering for the Jewish community. The Hurva Synagogue stands as a powerful symbol of the Jewish people’s enduring connection to Jerusalem.
