Nestled amidst the bustling landscape of Ampang, stands the Gurdwara Sahib Ampang. It’s a testament to the rich Sikh heritage woven into the fabric of Malaysia. In the early 1900s, Sikh dairy farmers and tin mine workers began settling in Ulu Klang and Ampang. Their devotion led to the construction of the first Gurdwara Sahib Ampang in 1918 at the Jalan Kerja Air Lama / Jalan Hulu Kelang junction. This humble wooden structure, with its attap roof, served as a spiritual sanctuary. The Guru Ka Langgar, the communal meal, was often served on water lily leaves gathered from a nearby stream, showcasing the resourcefulness of the early Sikh community. The Gurdwara Sahib Ampang underwent renovations over the years. The attap roof was replaced with zinc, providing more durability. The growing Sikh community needed a larger space. In 1974, the community acquired land for a new Gurdwara Sahib Ampang. The foundation stone was laid by YB Tan Sri V. Manikavasagam, the Minister of Transport. The new Gurdwara Sahib Ampang was completed in 1976. The construction cost RM45,000, with RM10,000 generously donated by the Malaysian government. The official opening ceremony took place on December 5, 1976, graced by the presence of Tun Hussein Onn, the Prime Minister of Malaysia. The current Gurdwara Sahib Ampang is a single-story brick building with a tiled roof. It stands as a symbol of community growth and unwavering faith. The langgar hall and kitchen are conveniently located at the side, while the Granthi’s quarters are at the back. Gurdwara Sahib Ampang has been served by dedicated Granthis. Bhai Mani Singh served from 1936 to 1951, Bhai Sadhu Singh from 1952 to 1965, Bhai Bachan Singh from 1966 to 1987, and Giani Bakhtawar Singh from 1989 to 2000. Today, around 120 families participate in the vibrant religious activities at Gurdwara Sahib Ampang. Weekly prayers are held every Sunday morning. The Naujawan (youth) programs take place on the second Saturday of each month. Gurdwara Sahib Ampang continues to serve as a spiritual haven, nurturing the Sikh community in Ampang.
