Did the stones beneath our feet whisper tales of resilience? Here, at the Memorial for the former synagogue of Rödelheim Sculpture, they certainly seem to. This memorial isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a poignant echo of a community lost and a testament to the enduring power of memory. The Memorial for the former synagogue of Rödelheim Sculpture stands as a stark reminder of the vibrant Jewish community that once thrived in Rödelheim.

The original synagogue, built in 1730, served as the heart of Jewish life in Rödelheim for generations. The community gathered here to pray, celebrate, and find solace in their shared faith. However, this sanctuary was tragically destroyed during the Kristallnacht pogrom in 1938. SA men set fire to the synagogue on the morning of November 10th. Luckily, a nearby tank farm allowed for quick extinguishment, preventing further destruction. Though the fire was contained, the synagogue’s fate was sealed. The Jewish community was forced to sell the building in 1939. It became a storage room for a neighboring auto repair shop before being heavily damaged during an air raid in 1944 and eventually demolished.

The current memorial, created by sculptor Christof Krause, captures the agony and loss of this community. The sculpture depicts a group of naked figures huddled together, symbolizing their vulnerability and their shared journey towards death. The sculpture sits atop a red sandstone pedestal, inscribed in both German and Hebrew. Atop this pedestal is a stylized menorah, a powerful symbol of Judaism and its enduring spirit. The Memorial for the former synagogue of Rödelheim Sculpture is more than just a memorial. It is a tangible piece of history, a space where we can reflect on the devastating consequences of hatred and intolerance. The memorial was erected in 1979, but in 2009, the city took further steps to honor the memory of the lost synagogue. The outline of the original synagogue was recreated on the ground with paving stones, creating a ghostly footprint of the sacred space. A new memorial was added within this outline. This memorial includes a stele inscribed with the names of the known Jewish victims murdered or driven to death by the Nazis. Interestingly, the memorial stands half inside and half outside the synagogue’s outline. This deliberate placement symbolizes that the victims were targeted for their “Jewish race,” regardless of their individual beliefs or level of religious observance. A Torah stone placed on the east wall marks the former location of the Torah shrine, adding another layer of meaning to the memorial. The updated memorial was dedicated in 2015.

The Memorial for the former synagogue of Rödelheim Sculpture calls upon us to remember the past, to learn from its tragedies, and to strive towards a future where such atrocities are never repeated.
