Ceausescu’s folly. That’s what many whispered about the Palace of the Parliament. Look at its sheer size. The Palace of the Parliament dominates Bucharest’s skyline. It’s a colossal structure, the world’s largest administrative building for civilian use. Second only to the Pentagon in overall size. It’s also the heaviest building in the world, a testament to the 700,000 tons of steel and bronze used in its construction. Add to that a million cubic meters of marble, 3,500 tons of crystal glass, and 900,000 cubic meters of wood, and you begin to grasp the scale of Ceausescu’s ambition. The Palace of the Parliament houses the Romanian Chamber of Deputies and the Senate. It also holds a museum, conference halls, exhibition spaces, and opulent salons. The palace wasn’t always known by this name. It was originally called the People’s House, a darkly ironic label given the human cost of its creation. Construction began in 1984 under Nicolae Ceausescu. Approximately 100,000 people worked tirelessly on this project, often in grueling 24/7 shifts. Unofficial reports suggest thousands perished during the construction. Even soldiers were conscripted, with records showing 12,000 participating between 1984 and 1990. The Palace of the Parliament consumed a staggering portion of Romania’s resources. To make way for this behemoth, 20 churches and 10,000 houses were demolished. More than 57,000 families were displaced. By the time of the Romanian Revolution in 1989, the Palace of the Parliament was only 60% complete. Construction resumed between 1992 and 1996, finally bringing Ceausescu’s vision, however flawed, to fruition. The final cost? An estimated 3 billion euros, a price tag as colossal as the building itself.
