Atop this hill stands the Admiral Vasile Urseanu Bucharest City Observatory. Its unique ship-like design is breathtaking. This isn’t just any building. It’s a monument to a man’s passion. A passion for both the sea and the stars.

Admiral Vasile Urseanu a Romanian war hero and fervent amateur astronomer founded this observatory. Built between 1908 and 1910 it housed one of Romania’s largest telescopes at the time. A Zeiss telescope with a 150 mm diameter. Urseanu himself financed its construction. He wanted it to resemble a ship. He desired to feel like he was floating at sea while gazing at the cosmos.

The observatory opened in 1910. Amateur astronomers flocked to it. But after Urseanu’s death in 1926 its telescope was stored away. The building served other purposes for a while. It even housed a city art gallery. Finally in 1950 the telescope was reinstalled. The observatory resumed its original purpose. It was formally dedicated to its founder in 1990.

Interestingly the observatory’s design isn’t merely aesthetic. The observation point is positioned at the building’s highest point. This mirrors the placement of observation points on ships. The building itself is a blend of French eclecticism and local Romanian architectural styles. Architect Ion D Berindei also designed other notable Bucharest buildings.

The Admiral Vasile Urseanu Bucharest City Observatory is more than just an observatory. It’s a piece of Bucharest’s history. It’s a testament to a man’s dedication. It’s a place where the sea and the stars meet. And where you too can gaze into the infinite depths of space. A place where history and astronomy converge. A truly remarkable location.
