“Have you ever felt the weight of history beneath your feet?” We stand before the Domnița Bălașa Church. This isn’t just a building. It’s a testament to resilience a story etched in brick and stone.

The Domnița Bălașa Church boasts a history as turbulent as the Dâmbovița River that once flowed nearby. Princess Bălașa sixth daughter of Prince Constantin Brâncoveanu founded the first church here. It was a small wooden structure built in 1773-1774. This original church however met an unfortunate end destroyed by fire.

Undeterred Princess Bălașa commissioned a stone replacement in 1751. This too would face its trials. The 1838 earthquake severely damaged the second structure. It was replaced by a third church built between 1838 and 1842. Even this wasn’t spared. Dâmbovița River floods led to its demolition in 1881.

The church we see today is the fourth iteration. Built between 1881 and 1885 it’s a blend of Romanesque and Gothic Revival styles. King Carol I and Queen Elizabeth themselves attended the cornerstone laying ceremony. They left their mark too. Their thrones adorned with the royal coat of arms and the motto “Nihil sine Deo” still stand to the left of the altar.

Interestingly the Domnița Bălașa Church has never hosted a funeral. It’s always been a place of celebration. Weddings and baptisms have filled its halls for generations.

Within its walls lie the remains of Domnița Bălașa herself. Her funerary monument a poignant depiction of sadness stands in a side niche. Next to her rests Zoe Brâncoveanu whose monument was created by the French sculptor Jules Roulleau. Their stories are interwoven with the very fabric of the church itself.

The Domnița Bălașa Church has endured earthquakes floods and the passage of time. It stands as a symbol of faith perseverance and the enduring spirit of Bucharest. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty its resilience its story.
