“What makes this church so special?” I ask, gesturing towards the Saigon Evangelical Church. This isn’t just a building. It represents faith. It embodies community. It stands as a testament to resilience.
The Saigon Evangelical Church has a deep history. Its roots intertwine with the broader story of Protestant Christianity in Vietnam. The Hoi Thanh Tin Lanh or The Evangelical Church played a vital role. This denomination provided support. It helped in the application for establishing an international church here in Ho Chi Minh City.
Initially, the Saigon Church on Tran Hung Dao Street was considered as a site. However, it didn’t materialize. Later, the location at 98 Le Quoc Hung Street in District 4 was requested. In April 2012, the Vietnamese Government approved the formation of the church at this location.
Before its inaugural service on September 2, 2012, the church received its name. It was named “THE WELL”. Though independent, THE WELL maintains close ties with Hoi Thanh Tin Lanh Vietnam. This sponsoring body is invaluable. The church embraces diversity. It stays true to Protestant Christianity’s core beliefs. These beliefs are found in the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed.
Today, THE WELL International Church continues to serve Ho Chi Minh City’s expatriate community. It offers English worship services every Sunday. The services include contemporary worship. Prayers are offered for the world. Expository sermons are delivered.
After each service, people gather. They enjoy snacks and coffee. They engage in good conversations. Small groups also meet regularly. Everyone is welcome to worship here.
In 2023, Rev. Donald McIsaac became the pastor. Ordained with the Korean Presbyterian Church Abroad he brought extensive ministry experience. He ministered cross-culturally for many years. His experiences included ministry in Central Asia, East Africa, and Canada.
