Ever wondered how a power plant can transform from coal to clean energy? The story of Chiba Thermal Power Station is one such tale. Right here in Chiba stands a testament to Japan’s evolving energy needs.

Let’s dive into the story of Chiba Thermal Power Station. It began in the late 1950s. It was initially a coal-burning plant with a 600MW capacity. Four units worked tirelessly to power the region.

As time passed the demand for electricity grew. The old facilities aged. In 2000 a significant change occurred. The Chiba Thermal Power Station was renovated. It became a combined cycle power plant. It switched to cleaner Liquefied Natural Gas or LNG. This transformation marked a new chapter for the station.

The renovation involved constructing Groups 1 and 2. These additions boosted the station’s maximum output to 2880 MW. The project cost over 340 billion Yen.

Then came the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. In response three gas turbine systems were quickly built in just four months. From 2012 to 2014 a more advanced combined cycle system called Group 3 was added. This increased the power output by 1500MW.

Today Chiba Thermal Power Station has a maximum output of 4380 MW. The power station occupies about 760000 square meters of land. It is owned by JERA. LNG fuel arrives via pipeline from Sodegaura Power Station and Futtsu Power Station. The station releases its water into the sea.

The Chiba Thermal Power Station uses a combined cycle gas turbine. This makes it more efficient. Groups 1 and 2 have a thermal efficiency of 54.2%. Group 3 is even more efficient. Units 3-1 and 3-2 boast 57.3% efficiency. Unit 3-3 reaches 57.7%.

GE Power played a crucial role in the Chiba Thermal Power Station. They supplied steam turbines and gas turbines for various phases. They also provided electric generators and steam boilers. GE Power even served as the O&M contractor for Group I blocks for 15 years.

Interestingly Group 3 was built outdoors to expedite construction. Groups 1 and 2 are housed indoors. This quick construction was vital after the 2011 earthquake.

Originally the plant burned coal and later crude oil. The older groups operated from 1957 to 1999. They had a lower thermal efficiency of around 37 to 38%.

The Chiba Thermal Power Station stands as a key power provider. It supports Japan’s energy needs. It has transformed over the years. It now uses cleaner and more efficient technology. It exemplifies how power generation adapts to changing times.
