What secrets hide behind these walls? The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan at Taunusstraße 3 in Berlin has witnessed a rollercoaster of history. This elegant country house, nestled in the Grunewald district of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, stands as a symbol of Afghanistan’s complex relationship with Germany. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan serves as the diplomatic mission of Afghanistan to Germany. The current ambassador, Yama Yari, presented his credentials on February 3, 2021. Interestingly, the consular services are actually located around the corner at Kronberger Strasse 5. Afghanistan also maintains two Consuls General, one in Bonn and another in Grünwald, near Munich. The Bonn office is a legacy of the time when Bonn served as the capital of West Germany. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan has seen a century of evolving relations between Afghanistan and Germany. Initial contacts were made in 1915 between the German Reich and the Emirate of Afghanistan. Formal diplomatic ties were established in 1922. The German Embassy in Afghanistan reopened in December 2001 following the fall of the Taliban regime. It initially operated as a liaison office, soon transitioning to a full embassy with the German Ambassador being the first to present credentials to the new Afghan administration. The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and its presence in Berlin reflects a partnership marked by cooperation and reconstruction. Germany played a crucial role in hosting conferences on Afghanistan’s future, including the pivotal 2004 Berlin Conference where the international community pledged long-term support. A decade after the first Petersberg Conference, Germany again hosted a conference on Afghanistan in Bonn in 2011. This conference reinforced the international commitment to Afghanistan beyond the end of NATO’s ISAF combat mission in 2014.
