Sculpted in bronze, a stylized cannon reaches skyward, a powerful tribute to Romania’s artillery forces. This is the Monumentul Eroilor Artileriști, commemorating 150 years of Romanian artillery. It stands proudly on Bulevardul Eroilor Sanitari, where it intersects with Bulevardul Eroilor. Inaugurated on November 10, 1993, Romania’s Artillery Day, the monument is the work of sculptor Teodor Zamfirescu. The cannon points directly upwards at a 90-degree angle, a dramatic pose frozen in time. The cannon rests on a travertine-clad concrete pedestal. Surrounding the pedestal is a circular platform, about 12 meters in diameter. Four metal cannonballs are placed on this platform, adding to the sense of realism. Two medieval cannons, replicas from the reign of Petru Cercel, flank the monument. The inscription on the pedestal reads, “Artileriștilor României,” a dedication to Romania’s artillerymen. Before the Monumentul Eroilor Artileriști, this spot held a very different monument: a statue of Petru Groza, unveiled in 1971. After the 1989 revolution, this statue, along with the statue of Lenin, was removed. Both were relocated to the park near Mogoșoaia Palace. Unfortunately, the Monumentul Eroilor Artileriști has been a target of vandalism. In December 2003, sixteen bronze cannonballs arranged in pyramids were stolen, a loss of approximately eighty kilograms of bronze. The theft serves as a reminder of the challenges in preserving public art. Yet, the monument stands, a testament to the enduring spirit of Romanian artillery.
