Pray for success here at Houkoku-jinja Shrine. This shrine is dedicated to a remarkable figure. Houkoku-jinja Shrine honors Toyotomi Hideyoshi. He was a famous warlord. He unified Japan.
Houkoku-jinja Shrine is located in Osaka Castle Park. It is near the moats. The shrine is also called Toyokuni Shrine. This means it was built in memory of Toyotomi Hideyoshi.
Emperor Meiji ordered its construction in 1879. He wanted to honor Hideyoshi. Two other members of Hideyoshi’s family are also enshrined here. These members are Toyotomi Hidenaga and Toyotomi Hideyori. Hidenaga was Hideyoshi’s half-brother. Hideyori was his heir.
Look at the bronze statue. It is of Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Contemporary sculptor Nakamura Shinya created it in 2007. This is the second statue of Hideyoshi at the shrine. The first was used for the war effort in the 1940s. The statue faces Osaka Castle.
Notice the mineral garden to the right of the main pavilion. It is called Shuseki-tei. It means “Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s stone garden.” Mirei Shigemori designed this Zen garden. The Kyoto Rinsen Garden Association donated it in 1972.
Houkoku-jinja Shrine attracts locals. They pray for luck and success. Shinto weddings are often celebrated here. Weekends offer the best chance to see a wedding parade.
Visit in early spring. The Castle Park’s cherry blossoms enhance the shrine’s beauty. Summer festivals also create an enchanting atmosphere. Events occur at the shrine each month on the 18th.
Houkoku-jinja Shrine was first on Nakanoshima Island. It moved to its current location in 1961. It benefits from its closeness to Osaka Castle. It attracts visitors strolling in the park.
The Main Hall is where people wish for career success. The Wedding Hall hosts Japanese wedding ceremonies. The statue of Toyotomi Hideyoshi stands 5.2 meters tall. Yukimura Zakura is a cherry tree donated by Ueda City. Sanada Yukimura, a samurai who served the Toyotomi family, came from this city. Shuseki-tei is a stone garden designed by Mirei Shigemori. The Kyoto Garden Association donated it.
Tenjin Matsuri Festival occurs in July. It is one of Japan’s top three festivals. The Osaka lantern festival occurs in August. Thousands of lanterns light up Osaka Castle.
