From a simple plot of land in Bucharest’s Dealul Piscului area, a literary haven emerged. This is the Tudor Arghezi Memorial House, also known as “Mărțișor.” In 1926, Tudor Arghezi, a giant of Romanian poetry, purchased this land. He envisioned a space where his creativity could flourish. With the help of Swedish architect Jahanes, the Tudor Arghezi Memorial House began to take shape. Arghezi, ever the individualist, designed the house to reflect his unique vision. By 1930, he and his wife, Paraschiva, moved into three of its eventual twenty rooms. The house continued to grow, much like Arghezi’s literary legacy. Between 1935 and 1937, a special annex was added. This became his printing workshop, where he and his son, Baruțu, produced books and magazines. The Tudor Arghezi Memorial House is more than just a house. It is a time capsule. Inside, you’ll find original furniture, books, artwork, and documents, offering a glimpse into Arghezi’s life and work. The printing workshop, “Biletelor de papagal,” now houses volumes, documents, magazines, and images, further enriching the story of this remarkable man and his family. Even the garden holds significance. It is the final resting place of Tudor, Paraschiva, and their daughter, Mitzura Arghezi. The Tudor Arghezi Memorial House stands as a testament to his enduring influence on Romanian literature. It’s a place where words come alive, and the spirit of a poet continues to inspire.
