Before you stands the Contour de l’Hôtel de Ville a testament to Lille’s resilience and architectural ambition. This isn’t just a street it’s the outline of a remarkable story a story etched in stone brick and the very spirit of the city.

The Hôtel de Ville itself a magnificent structure boasts a history as rich and layered as its neo-Flemish Renaissance and Art Deco facade. It wasn’t always here. Before the current building which was constructed between 1924 and 1932 the city hall stood on Place Rihour. A fire in 1916 destroyed that building. This paved the way for a new symbol a new era for post-war Lille. The chosen location Square Ruault in the Saint-Sauveur district was then considered somewhat out of the way a working-class area marked by 19th-century industrial housing.

The architect Émile Dubuisson envisioned a complete transformation of the neighborhood. New avenues would be cut through creating a modern urban landscape. But the project was hampered by post-war financial constraints. The three wings originally planned were never fully realized. The current building we see today is the result of several phases of construction including a significant expansion in the early 1990s. Its incomplete state is a tangible reminder of history’s unpredictable twists and turns.

The building’s design is fascinating. Its polychrome facade evokes Flemish houses with mullioned windows and triangular gables. These features are enhanced by Art Deco detailing a style often called Regionalist Art Deco unique to Lille. But the most striking element is the belfry. This reinforced concrete tower soars 104 meters high. It’s the tallest municipal building in France. The climb to the top 400 steps rewards you with breathtaking panoramic views of Lille. The belfry’s design is inspired by the ‘Lilloise span’ a characteristic architectural feature of 17th-century Lille houses. At its base are concrete statues of Lydéric and Phinaert legendary founders of the city created by Carlo Sarrabezolles.

Step closer to the building. Imagine the activity inside. The Great Gallery an internal ‘street’ 143 meters long connects various parts of the building. This interior space featuring concrete pillars with marble and wrought iron details forms a municipal artery. The council chamber the wedding room and even Roger Salengro’s office (left untouched since his death) are all located within this impressive structure a fitting tribute to the city’s past and a testament to its enduring spirit.

So as you walk along the Contour de l’Hôtel de Ville remember that this is more than just a street. It’s the perimeter of a remarkable building a history lesson a symbol of Lille’s strength its resilience and its architectural ingenuity. It’s a reminder that even unfinished projects can tell powerful stories. And it’s an invitation to explore the heart of Lille.
