The Wings Monument, unveiled in May 2016, replaced a symbol of oppression with one of hope. The sculptor, Mihai Buculei, whose own father endured imprisonment at Aiud jail during the communist era, poured his heart into this project. Imagine three immense, weathered bronze wings, reaching skyward from a granite and grass-covered pedestal. These wings, each a stunning 24 meters high, represent the Holy Trinity. They carry the souls of the countless Romanians who perished in prisons, camps, and detention centers during the dark years of communism. The pedestal itself, a four-meter-high cairn, symbolizes an imaginary tomb, a collective memorial for the thousands of unknown victims. The Wings Monument isn’t just a static sculpture. It’s a living testament to the enduring human spirit. Every year on March 9th, Romanians gather here to commemorate the Day of the Anticommunist Political Detainees. Religious services, military honors, and wreath ceremonies transform the monument into a focal point of remembrance and reflection. The monument’s location is significant. It stands near Herăstrău Park, a vibrant green space offering a stark contrast to the imposing architecture of the House of the Free Press, a building reminiscent of Moscow State University. Its placement ensures that almost everyone arriving from Otopeni Airport will see this powerful symbol of freedom, a reminder of the sacrifices made to achieve it.
