Ever wondered about a man so close to Prophet Muhammad that he was mistaken for a member of his household? That man’s legacy echoes within the walls of Masjid Abdullah bin Masood. This mosque carries the name of Abdullah ibn Masud, a prominent figure in early Islam. Let’s delve into his story and understand the significance of this Masjid Abdullah bin Masood.

Abdullah ibn Masud was born in Mecca around 594 AD. In his youth, Abdullah tended flocks for a Quraish chieftain. One day, he met Prophet Muhammad and Abu Bakr. Impressed by them, Abdullah embraced Islam. He became the sixth person to convert. Abdullah then dedicated his life to serving the Prophet. He attended to his needs and accompanied him on journeys. People even called him “bearer of the siwak”.

Abdullah ibn Masud received unique training in the Prophet’s household. He adopted the Prophet’s manners and traits. People said he was the closest to the Prophet in character. Outsiders perceived Abdullah and his mother as members of Muhammad’s household. The Prophet trusted him implicitly.

Abdullah ibn Masud was an exceptional reciter and interpreter of the Quran. The Prophet himself praised Abdullah’s knowledge. Umar ibn al-Khattab affirmed his qualifications. The Prophet said: “Whoever wants to read the Quran as fresh as when it was revealed, then let him read according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd.”

Abdullah’s knowledge of the Quran was profound. He said that every verse was revealed with his knowing the circumstances. Umar ibn al-Khattab once tested a caravan. Abdullah ibn Masud was among them. He answered every question about the Quran with wisdom.

Abdullah ibn Masud was not only a scholar but also a brave individual. The companions were discussing who would recite the Quran openly to the Quraish. Abdullah volunteered despite the risks. He recited Surah Rahman. The Quraish beat him, but he continued reciting. His dedication impressed his fellow Muslims.

Abdullah ibn Masud participated in many battles, including Badr. He even beheaded Abu Jahl. Caliph Umar sent Abdullah to Kufa to educate people. Abdullah refused a salary, prioritizing spiritual rewards.

As treasurer, Abdullah lent money to Saad ibn Abi Waqqas. Later, he quarreled with al-Walid and resigned his post. He also criticized Uthman’s compilation of the Quran. He defended his own version.

Abdullah ibn Masud died in Medina in 653 AD. He was buried at Al-Baqi. He instructed his daughters to read Surah Al-Waqiah every night. This ensured they would never be affected by poverty. His legacy lives on through Masjid Abdullah bin Masood.

Reflect on Abdullah’s unwavering commitment to Islam. Consider his profound knowledge and bravery. Masjid Abdullah bin Masood stands as a tribute. It honors a man who embodied the teachings of the Prophet. May this Masjid Abdullah bin Masood always remind us of Abdullah’s legacy.
