Was Jones Tabernacle A.M.E. always its name? No. This grand church standing before us was originally known as Union Methodist Episcopal Church. Built between 1888 and 1889, its architects, Hazelhurst & Huckel, chose the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Look closely and you’ll see the entrance archway with its squat Syrian columns, the prominent front gable, and the intricate details of the chimneys, towers, and pinnacles. Notice the checkerboard pattern of stone on the gable, framing a beautiful Palladian window. Around the 1930s, the church found a new purpose as the Jones Tabernacle A.M.E. Church. It thrived under the leadership of Rev. Richard R. Wright, Jr., son of the influential Richard R. Wright. The church was more than just a place of worship. It became a pillar of strength for the North Philadelphia community. The church provided solace and aid, offering food and clothing assistance, while tirelessly advocating for societal change and offering support to those impacted by poverty and violence. Even today, the legacy of compassion and community support lives on, making Jones Tabernacle A.M.E. a beacon of hope.
