This 23-hectare facility is a hive of activity, processing around 250,000 tons of residential and commercial waste annually. In addition, it handles 3,500 tons of hospital waste, demanding an even higher level of care and precision. The AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg complex houses several key facilities. The waste-to-energy plant is the heart of the operation. Here, waste is incinerated at temperatures exceeding 850°C, transforming discarded materials into valuable energy. A sophisticated, five-stage flue gas cleaning system ensures that emissions are minimized, protecting the environment and surrounding community. The resulting steam powers generators, producing both electricity and district heating, which are then fed into public networks. In 2016 alone, AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg fed 59 GWh of electricity and 193 GWh of district heating into these networks. Beyond energy generation, AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg boasts one of Germany’s largest bio-waste fermentation plants. Here, organic waste undergoes a transformation, producing biogas, compost, and liquid fertilizer. This process not only diverts waste from landfills but also creates valuable agricultural resources. AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg also houses a sorting facility for lightweight packaging, paper, and cardboard. These materials are meticulously sorted, baled, and shipped off for recycling, further reducing the overall environmental impact. Owned by the Abfallzweckverband Augsburg (AZV), a public waste disposal association, AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg is a shining example of a public-private partnership working towards a sustainable future. The plant’s commitment to innovation extends beyond its daily operations. It has even experimented with storing waste heat in containers of sodium acetate, transporting this stored energy to nearby Friedberg to heat a school complex.
