Envision yourself standing at the Flushing Meadows Bird Blind. This hidden gem offers a surprising communion with nature. It is nestled in the middle of busy Queens.

The Flushing Meadows Bird Blind is on the east side of Willow Lake. It is accessible via a turnoff from the Pat Dolan Trail. This trail is named after the founder of the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Conservancy. The trail winds through restored wetland and upland habitat.

From the bird blind, look across at the low overhanging willows. You might see roosting wading birds. Black-crowned Night-Herons and Great Blue Herons can be found here all year round.

Willow Lake itself is a haven for wintering waterfowl. All three Merganser species can be spotted here. It is one of the most reliable spots to find Common Mergansers in New York City. Bufflehead, Ruddy Duck, and other diving and dabbling ducks also frequent the lake.

In recent years, Bald Eagles have become regular residents of Willow Lake. They stay from fall through spring. There are hopes that they will nest here someday. During migration, look for freshwater shorebirds. Wilson’s Snipe are regularly flushed from the muddy areas of the lake shore.

On your way to the Flushing Meadows Bird Blind, take your time. A variety of migratory land birds stop through the natural habitat around Willow Lake. Twenty-six warbler species have been recorded here. This habitat is large enough for some interesting breeding land birds to stay through the summer. Northern Flickers, Eastern Kingbirds, Willow Flycatchers, Yellow Warblers, and Cedar Waxwings all may breed here. Red-winged Blackbirds are also plentiful.

The Flushing Meadows-Corona Park Conservancy installed this wooden bird blind. The structure, funded by grants, has slots. These slots let people watch ducks, geese, and other waterfowl around the lake without being too obtrusive.

Birds are sensitive to human disturbance. Having a blind means you get to see more birds. You will see more interesting behaviors. They will act as if no one is there.

Several months ago, a rare pink-footed goose took up residence around Meadow Lake. People came from all over the East Coast to see it. Birdwatchers never know what they are going to see at the Flushing Meadows Bird Blind.

Patricia Dolan, of the conservancy, said the group hopes to build a similar blind at adjacent Willow Lake. This natural area also attracts birdwatchers.

So, take a moment to appreciate this unique spot. The Flushing Meadows Bird Blind offers a chance to connect with nature. It reminds us of the importance of preserving urban wildlife habitats. Keep an eye out for the diverse array of birds that call this place home. You never know what wonders you might witness here.
