“A lake born from destruction.” That’s what they sometimes call the Silbersee, a body of water with a past as intriguing as its name, which means “Silver Lake”. But don’t let the shimmering surface fool you. This isn’t your typical scenic lake. The Silbersee was born from the abandoned ruins of a colossal dream – the “German Stadium”, designed by Hitler’s architect, Albert Speer. Imagine a stadium so vast it would dwarf any other, intended to hold a staggering 400,000 spectators. Work began in 1937, but the outbreak of World War II in 1939 brought the grandiose project to a halt. What remained was a massive excavation pit. Over time, groundwater seeped in, slowly filling the void and creating the Silbersee. Even today, the lake holds remnants of the past. The nearby Silberbuck hill, for instance, is made from rubble of the city destroyed during the war. This rubble, sadly, contains hazardous materials, and as water flows from the hill into the lake, it carries with it toxic hydrogen sulfide. So, while the Silbersee might seem inviting, swimming is strictly prohibited. It stands as a poignant reminder of ambition and its consequences, a place where a dark past is slowly being reclaimed by nature.
