Amidst the sprawling San Fernando Valley, El Caballero Country Club stands as a testament to resilience and reinvention. The story of El Caballero begins, not on manicured greens, but on a vast 550-acre ranch. In 1919, Edgar Rice Burroughs, the creator of Tarzan, purchased this land, once owned by Los Angeles Times publisher, Harrison Gray Otis. Burroughs, a man of vision, saw the potential for a country club. In 1924, the original El Caballero Country Club was born, its board boasting such luminaries as Burroughs himself and Alphonzo Bell, the developer of Bel Air. This first El Caballero Country Club even hosted the 1927 Los Angeles Open. It featured a challenging 6,588-yard course, with two famously diminutive par threes, the 144-yard fifth and the 115-yard 17th. Otis’s former ranch house served as the clubhouse. The club was a hub for social gatherings, hosting luncheons and dinners, a testament to its prominence in the then-developing Valley. Sadly, the Great Depression brought financial hardship. The original El Caballero Country Club fell victim to bankruptcy, a casualty of the era’s economic turmoil. But the story doesn’t end there. In 1957, Bernie Shapiro envisioned a new El Caballero Country Club, built on land adjacent to the old club. Shapiro’s vision was groundbreaking. He established a club where membership wasn’t determined by race or religion, but by good moral character. Otis’s old ranch house was razed, making way for a new clubhouse. Today, El Caballero Country Club thrives, a testament to Shapiro’s inclusive vision. It stands as a premier destination for golf, social life, and memorable events. The club’s meticulously maintained grounds and stunning views of the Santa Monica Mountains offer a haven of tranquility and sophistication. El Caballero Country Club’s journey reflects the Valley’s own transformation, from rural landscape to vibrant hub. It’s a story of ambition, resilience, and the enduring power of community.
