Hidden beneath the soil, a story waits. This is the story of the Villa gallo-romaine. Here in Brussels, the whispers of ancient Rome still echo. The Villa gallo-romaine, a relic of a bygone era, stands as a testament to a rich and layered past. This wasn’t just a simple dwelling. It was a bustling center of life in the Roman province of Brabant.

The Villa gallo-romaine first emerged from obscurity in 1859. Archaeologist Louis Galesloot noted its existence. But it wasn’t until the mid-20th century that the villa truly revealed itself. Between 1965 and 1967, the ‘Cercle d’Histoire et d’Archéologie du Comté de Jette’ located the villa’s remains. Then, from 1967 to 1971, extensive excavations unveiled the main building. These excavations unearthed a treasure trove of artifacts. Coins, a belt buckle, and a small bronze bust offer glimpses into the lives of the villa’s inhabitants. These artifacts now reside at Dieleghem Abbey.

Over time, nature reclaimed the site. The villa’s layout became obscured by vegetation. But in 2014, a new chapter began. Bruxelles Environnement, in collaboration with the regional heritage department, initiated a series of surveys. These surveys aimed to rediscover and map the villa’s exact location. Archaeologist Stéphane Van Bellingen led the effort. His work brought the villa’s foundations back to light.

Thanks to these recent excavations, the main building’s plan has been fully restored. The foundations have been retraced with blue stones. Where walls had vanished, gravel pathways mark their former presence. A lawn now grows between the low walls. Visitors to King Baudouin Park can now experience the Villa gallo-romaine. Informative panels and a representation of the villa in its prime bring the site to life. The Villa gallo-romaine offers a unique journey through time. It’s a place where the echoes of Roman life resonate amidst the greenery of a modern park.
