Can you hear the echoes of cheers and the scraping of ice skates? Here at the Harbin International Convention Center, we witnessed the grand opening ceremony of the 9th Asian Winter Games in 2025. Sha Xiaoqiang, the ceremony’s director, spoke about the significance of ice lanterns. They represent childhood memories for those in northern China. They are a unique cultural symbol of Harbin. The opening ceremony showcased this beautifully, lighting the way for the future of winter sports. This spectacular “Ice and Snow Gala” highlighted the beauty of ice and snow culture, the passion of winter sports, and the warmth of Asian unity. The world felt the charm of Asia, the spirit of China, the unique character of Heilongjiang, and the allure of the ice city, Harbin. Liu Meng, the visual designer, described how “ice and snow hand flowers,” a symbol of celebration and good luck in Northeast China, were incorporated into the performance. Dancers held these dual-colored flowers, creating patterns that shifted from “ice crystal blue” to “China red,” symbolizing the transition from the “ice world” to the “snowy land” beneath. This festive display welcomed guests from around the world with a taste of Chinese New Year tradition, right here in Harbin at the 沙子坝. The ceremony wasn’t just about spectacle. It was designed to be an immersive experience. Ren Xinghua, another visual designer, explained how thousands of “snowflake chains” were suspended above, creating a magical, shimmering effect. LED lights further enhanced the atmosphere, transforming the surroundings into a dreamlike winter wonderland. Wu Wei, the chief producer, discussed how the athlete entrance showcased elements of traditional Chinese aesthetics. The performers’ costumes were inspired by the patterns of “square paper-cutting” and “birch bark painting.” The red lining evoked the sunrise over the Songhua River, symbolizing the arrival of spring and a new year. Even the seemingly simple act of ice harvesting held deep meaning. Liu Yang, the executive director, talked about the ice harvesters on the frozen Songhua River. Their rhythmic movements expressed a love for the land, a yearning for a better life, and a blessing for the new year. When the “head ice” broke free, it symbolized overcoming challenges and sending good luck to the Asian Winter Games. This electrifying performance resonated deeply within the Harbin International Convention Center, capturing the spirit of the Games and the essence of this ice city, which we will soon explore more as we venture beyond the 沙子坝.
