Welcome to Sachsenhausen Nord. Have you ever wondered what makes this part of Frankfurt so special?

Sachsenhausen Nord is more than just a district. It is a vibrant tapestry of history and modern life. It sits on the Main’s left bank opposite the old city. Sachsenhausen has been part of Frankfurt since the Middle Ages.

Administratively, Sachsenhausen divides into Nord and Süd. However, locals see it as one entity. About 61,470 people call Sachsenhausen home. Mörfelder Landstraße, partially alongside the railway embankment, marks the boundary. Eastward, it continues as Offenbacher Landstraße.

Sachsenhausen Nord boasts a dense Gründerzeit quarter. This contrasts with the more open development in the larger Sachsenhausen Süd. A large chunk of Frankfurt’s city forest also belongs to Sachsenhausen.

What truly sets Sachsenhausen apart? It is famous for its Apfelweinwirtschaften or apple wine taverns. Alt-Sachsenhausen, especially, draws visitors. Its high concentration of restaurants creates a lively atmosphere.

Binding-Brauerei marks the area as Frankfurt’s traditional brewery location. Though, Henninger-Brauerei, its neighbor, closed in 2001.

But there is more. The River Main embankment hosts the city’s largest flea market. It also boasts some of Germany’s best-known museums. This stretch is known as Museumsufer or Museum Embankment. The annual Museumsuferfest, or Night of the Museums, happens here. All museums stay open all night, offering discounted entry and street events.

Sachsenhausen is renowned for its nightlife. More than two dozen bars, taverns, and restaurants dot the old town in the southern part. Schweizer Straße is Sachsenhausen’s main street. It is a cosmopolitan boulevard lined with bars. It also houses two of Frankfurt’s most traditional cider houses: Zum gemalten Haus and Wagner.

Look for a wreath of evergreen branches outside. It signifies cider houses producing their own Apfelwein. Textorstraße and the Altstadt have the best-known cider houses. But you can find these pubs all over southern Hesse. Local law is rumored to require Apfelwein to be the cheapest alcoholic drink in any public house.

Do not miss the new Sachsenhausen area. It was built on the old slaughterhouse grounds. Find it on Deutschherrnufer, numbered between 40 and 50. It stands directly across from the European Central Bank’s new seat.

Landmarks define Sachsenhausen’s skyline. The Henninger Turm and the Goetheturm stand tall. Sachsenhausen also hosts the Sankt Georgen Graduate School of Philosophy and Theology.

Remember Sachsenhausen’s unique character. It has been Frankfurt’s bridgehead since the 12th century. Documents trace back to 1193. Unlike Frankfurt’s Altstadt, destroyed in 1944, Sachsenhausen’s old town remains partly preserved.

As you explore Sachsenhausen Nord, notice its blend of old and new. Imagine the clinking glasses in the Apfelwein taverns. Picture the bustling crowds at the Museumsuferfest. Feel the pulse of Frankfurt’s history beneath your feet. Sachsenhausen Nord offers a unique experience. It’s a place where tradition meets modernity.
