The Alma metro station a true work of art sits beneath our feet. UCLouvain Brussels Woluwe stands before us a testament to resilience and ambition.
This sprawling campus wasn’t always here. It’s a product of the Leuven crisis a tumultuous period in Belgian history that shook the foundations of the Catholic University of Louvain. In 1968 linguistic tensions led to a split. The French-speaking section needed a new home. They chose Woluwe-Saint-Lambert.
Construction began in the 1970s. The medical school opened its doors in 1974. The Cliniques universitaires Saint-Luc the university’s main hospital followed in 1976. Imagine the scale of this undertaking a new university hospital complex rising from the ground. This wasn’t just about bricks and mortar it was about rebuilding a future for French-speaking medical education.
Architect Lucien Kroll designed the heart of UCLouvain Brussels Woluwe. His vision was a university town built in consultation with the students. The result is Place de l’Alma. It’s a multi-level square a vibrant hub of activity. Buildings such as the Maison Medicale the Memé are listed protected monuments. Kroll’s designs are striking. He created a fascinating duality in some buildings. The Memé for instance has a so-called “fascist wing” with identical student rooms and a contrasting wing with diverse modular spaces. He even designed shared student rooms called granges barns.
UCLouvain Brussels Woluwe isn’t just a medical campus. It’s a multidisciplinary hub. Numerous institutions including EPHEC and the American University have found homes here. The campus has grown to encompass a vast sports complex research centres and even a botanical garden. Over 14000 students now call this place their academic home.
Even the seemingly mundane elements of the campus reveal surprising details. A large unfinished space exists beneath the hospital. It’s a hidden remnant of the original metro station plans. Then there’s the campus’s own police station a sign of its significance within the community.
Today UCLouvain Brussels Woluwe is a thriving modern campus. It successfully navigated a turbulent past. It represents a significant piece of Belgian history. It’s a remarkable centre of learning and discovery. This campus breathes with the dynamism of its students and faculty. Its future is as bright as its past is rich.
