“Who was Roger Lacey?” you might ask. Here, before the Roger Lacy Historic Marker Plaque, we uncover the story of a man who shaped Savannah’s Masonic history.

The Roger Lacy Historic Marker Plaque stands as a tribute to Roger Lacey. He was a pivotal figure in the early days of Freemasonry in Georgia. This marker honors his contributions.

Roger Lacey arrived in Savannah in 1734. He wasn’t here for a leisurely visit. Lacey came with a purpose. He carried a deputation. It came directly from the Grand Master of Masons in England. His mission was to constitute a lodge in Savannah.

Lacey spent much of his time at a trading post in Augusta. There, he worked as a trader. He also served as the post commander. It was a vital role in the growing colony.

Before his Georgia days, Roger Lacey belonged to Masonic Lodge No. 44. It was located at Swan Tavern in Long Acre, London. He was appointed Steward of the Grand Lodge of England on January 29, 1731. This appointment highlighted his dedication to the Masonic order.

The lodge he established is now Solomon’s Lodge No. 1. It became a cornerstone of Freemasonry in Georgia. Solomon’s Lodge No. 1 played a key role. It helped to create the Grand Lodge of Georgia on December 16, 1786.

To further honor his legacy, Roger Lacey Lodge No. 722 was named after him. This lodge continues the traditions. It upholds the values that Lacey brought to Savannah.

Think about the journey Lacey undertook. Imagine the challenges of establishing a lodge in a new colony. He set the stage for a lasting Masonic presence. The Roger Lacy Historic Marker Plaque reminds us of his dedication. It also honors his lasting impact on Savannah.

Standing here, reflect on Roger Lacey’s commitment to Freemasonry. Consider his influence on the development of Savannah. Let this marker serve as a reminder of the individuals who shaped our city. Their vision continues to guide us today.
