The San Joaquin Valley became a central hub for Southern Baptists. The Southern Baptist General Convention of California formed in 1940. Thirteen churches united in Shafter to establish this vital convention. The First Southern Baptist Church of Bell Gardens in Los Angeles County was organized in 1937. This marks the beginning of the significant Baptist presence in the region.

The Los Angeles Southern Baptist Association (LASBA) played a crucial role. It was founded in 1943. Five churches including Bell Gardens formed the initial LASBA. The association’s growth was phenomenal. By 1951 it included 51 churches. This included the first Spanish church Primera Iglesia Bautista de Sur. The association’s continued expansion is remarkable.

LASBA facilitated the creation of other associations. Churches branched out to form the San Fernando Valley and San Gabriel Valley associations.
