In 1831, a seed of faith was planted in Montreal. This seed blossomed into the First Baptist Church. We stand before its current incarnation, a testament to the enduring power of belief. First Baptist Church has witnessed the ebb and flow of Montreal’s history. Its story began on St. Helen Street in a simple chapel. The first service, held on September 25, 1831, was led by Reverend John Gilmour, who had journeyed from Aberdeen, Scotland the previous year. The church’s history is a compelling blend of worship and service, reflecting the dual passions of its congregation. For 185 years, First Baptist Church has offered solace and inspiration within its walls. Simultaneously, it has extended its hand to those in need beyond its doors. This commitment to both spiritual and physical well-being is a cornerstone of its legacy. The church has called several “beautiful edifices” home throughout its existence. Each building, while different, has served as a vessel for the Glory of the Lord. The current pastor, Reverend Ed Carruthers, continues this tradition of welcoming all who seek spiritual guidance.
