Here stands Pro Patria. What stories do these stones whisper? Pro Patria Monument commemorates the Belgian Revolution of 1830. It stands on Martyrs’ Square in Brussels. This is a tribute to those who fought for independence.
The story starts with unrest. Belgians felt oppressed under foreign rule. They yearned for freedom. The revolution ignited after an opera performance. It took place at the Thèâtre Royal de la Monnaie in August 1830. This event sparked a short but intense uprising.
Street fights erupted across Brussels. Brave citizens fought for their rights. The battles raged from September 23rd to 26th. Pro Patria honors the 467 heroes who died. They are buried beneath this very square.
Look closely at the monument’s design. Louis Roelandt designed it in neoclassical style in 1836. Guillaume Geefs sculpted the allegorical figures. Inaugurated in 1838 it wasn’t fully complete until 1849. The sculpted decoration was finished then.
Notice the female figure atop Pro Patria. Carved from white Carrara marble she represents Belgium. She stands proudly on broken chains. This symbolizes freedom from oppression. “Patria” is Latin for homeland.
Four leaning angels adorn the pedestal’s corners. They represent prayer combat victory and inhumation. Marble slabs bear inscriptions. “Patria” is inscribed on the west and east sides. Crowns of palms decorate the north and south sides.
Descend into the funerary crypt. It lies beneath the square. Arched arcades rest on blue stone pillars. Black marble plaques list the names of 466 revolutionaries. They fell during the September Days. Among them are residents of Brussels Flemings Walloons and foreigners.
Consider the square’s history. It was once a bleachfield for textiles. Later it was named Saint Michael’s Square. After the revolution it became Martyrs’ Square. It became a place of national commemoration.
Pro Patria has seen changes over time. Flowerbeds and fountains once adorned the square. These were later replaced. The monument has undergone restoration. New LED lighting now illuminates it.
