Hoapsa Temple rests at the foot of Samseongsan Mountain, a peak said to embody a powerful tiger spirit. Legend has it that during the founding of the Joseon Dynasty, King Taejo faced a mysterious obstacle. His palace construction was plagued by inexplicable collapses. One night, a creature described as half-tiger, half-unknown, attacked the palace. Guards fired arrows, but the creature vanished into the darkness. A wise old man then appeared to King Taejo. He revealed that the tiger-shaped Samseongsan Mountain held potent energy. To quell this force, a temple needed to be built at the mountain’s tail. Hoapsa Temple is the result of that advice. It serves as a symbolic anchor, suppressing the tiger’s energy and ensuring the stability of the kingdom. Hoapsa Temple is also a starting point for the Gwanaksan Mountain Dulle-gil hiking trail.
