In 1789, a prominent architect, Laurent-Benoît Dewez, renovated a mansion in Brussels for his mother-in-law. This neoclassical building, known as the Hotel Dewez, would later become the home of the Belgian Museum of Freemasonry. The Belgian Museum of Freemasonry opened its doors in 2011. It stands as a testament to the often-misunderstood world of Freemasonry. The museum aims to shed light on this discreet association, inviting the public to explore its history, symbolism, and values. Inside the Belgian Museum of Freemasonry, you’ll find a rich collection of artifacts. These include documents, books, decorations, jewelry, and ceramics. These items trace the evolution of Freemasonry from its origins in the early 18th century to the present day. The museum’s location in the Hotel Dewez adds another layer of significance to the experience. The building itself reflects the neoclassical style embraced by the Freemason elite during the Enlightenment. The restoration of the Hotel Dewez between 2008 and 2011 meticulously preserved its architectural features. These features include the symmetrical facade, triangular pediment, pilasters, and attic. The interior spaces, paintings, wallpapers, and wood paneling have also been carefully restored to their former glory. The Belgian Museum of Freemasonry is more than just a museum. It’s a scientific institution that collaborates with the Centre for Masonic Studies and Documentation (CEDOM). It strives to make the Masonic approach understandable to all. There are roughly 25,000 Freemasons in Belgium, one-third of whom are women. This fact underscores the museum’s commitment to inclusivity and openness. The Belgian Museum of Freemasonry offers a unique opportunity to step behind the veil of secrecy. It allows one to understand the principles and practices of this influential organization.
