Akarihime’s radiant spirit watches over Hirano Shrine, also known as Akarihime-no-mikoto-jinja. Here in Osaka’s Hirano Ward, amidst the bustling city, lies a tranquil place. It is dedicated to the goddess Akarihime-no-mikoto, a deity with a fascinating story. Akarihime-no-mikoto Shrine, or Hirano Shrine as it’s locally known, is steeped in history. Its origins are intertwined with the legendary tale of Akarihime and her ill-fated romance with the prince Ame-no-hiboko. Akarihime-no-mikoto, according to the Kojiki, hailed from Silla, an ancient kingdom in Korea. Legend says she was born from a red jewel, bathed in sunlight. This red jewel was coveted by Ame-no-hiboko, a prince of Silla. Captivated by its beauty, he obtained the jewel. The jewel then transformed into the beautiful Akarihime. Ame-no-hiboko, smitten, took her as his wife. However, their happiness was short-lived. Ame-no-hiboko, growing restless, decided to sail to Japan. Akarihime, heartbroken, followed him. She eventually settled in Naniwa, which is now Osaka. She enshrined herself at Hirano Shrine, becoming its patron deity. Akarihime-no-mikoto Shrine has been a place of worship since at least the Heian period. It was known then as the Sanjuho Shrine, or Thirty Steps Shrine. Several theories attempt to explain this name. One suggests it originated from a priest’s ritual. He recited the Lotus Sutra thirty times during a drought, bringing much-needed rain. Another theory links the name to the shrine’s size, proposing it originally encompassed thirty steps of land. The shrine’s main hall is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese architecture. A red-painted wooden structure, it stands on a small hill at the back of the shrine grounds. This hill is a remnant of the Hirano mound, a significant archaeological site from the medieval period. Near the main hall are smaller shrines dedicated to other deities. These include the Ikushima Shrine and the Sumitani Shrine. Akarihime-no-mikoto Shrine is more than just a historical landmark. It is a living testament to the enduring power of love, loss, and devotion. It’s a place where the whispers of the past mingle with the prayers of the present.
