Helen Keller’s connection with Japan began early. Her mother suggested finding a role model. Young Helen chose Hokiichi Hanawa. A blind Japanese scholar from the Edo period. A truly inspiring figure himself.

In 1937 Keller visited Japan for the first time. She was warmly welcomed. She traveled throughout the country. She even met members of the Japanese royal family. During one lecture Keller shared her childhood connection to Hanawa. Japan was deeply moved by her story.

The Japanese government gifted her an Akita puppy. Named Kamikaze-Go. The first Akita in the US. When Kamikaze-Go died his younger brother Kenzan-Go was sent to Keller.

Keller returned to Japan twice more. In 1948 and 1955. Her visits generated great excitement. She was greeted by large cheering crowds. She even visited Hiroshima and Nagasaki. In 1948 she helped promote legislation for the disabled in Japan. Her influence was immense.

Her final visit in 1955 led to this memorial’s creation. Sculptor Ami Hayakawa created this beautiful statue. It stands as a symbol of hope and inspiration. A lasting tribute to Helen Keller’s extraordinary life. A life deeply intertwined with the history of Japan.

This statue was dedicated on June 1st 2011. The anniversary of Helen Keller’s death. The Chiba Eye Bank Association established it. Established by the Lions Club 333-C District in Chiba. A fitting tribute. A lasting legacy.
