Behold the Urban Trees They aren’t actual trees. They are art. Thirty unique sculptures rooted in planter boxes. Each one a whimsical character in a tree-like pose. This half-mile stretch along San Diego’s North Embarcadero is a vibrant public art exhibition. It started seven years ago. It has become wildly popular.

The Urban Trees project began as a way to liven up the waterfront promenade. The Port of San Diego’s Public Art Department had a vision. They wanted to enhance the area’s beauty. They held a national call for artists. Eighty-two entries were submitted. Thirty were selected for the Urban Trees 7 exhibit.

The sculptures are incredibly diverse. One shows a man balancing on one arm. Another is a dancing figure on one leg. There’s a playful dolphin balancing a ball. Each artwork adds a touch of whimsy and wonder. Some artists used the arboreal theme literally. Brandon Roth’s “Liberation” features a tree with aluminum leaves. It is encircled by an empty birdcage. Garrett Goodwin’s “The Spectrum of Time” is made from recycled tree trunks. Colorful glass pieces are embedded in them.

Even Hollywood stars have participated. Daniel Stern best known for his roles in “Home Alone” and “City Slickers” created a bronze sculpture. It is an eight-foot-tall man balancing on one hand. It’s called “Handstand”. Other artists took a more abstract approach. Jeff Zischke’s “Red Palm” looks like a real palm tree from afar. Upon closer inspection the fronds are actually made of red rakes. Glenn Vogel’s “23rd Century Palm” is a sleek aluminum tree that sways in the bay breeze.

The Urban Trees sculptures are more than just art. They’re conversation starters. They draw visitors. They transform the waterfront into a lively and engaging space. Cruise ship passengers admire them. Restaurant patrons pause to appreciate them. Pedestrians turn their heads. Everyone enjoys the unique art. The Urban Trees are a testament to the power of public art. They bring joy. They enhance the urban landscape. They make San Diego a more vibrant and welcoming place.

The Urban Trees project continues to evolve. New works are added each year. Each piece brings its own personality and story to the Embarcadero. This unique art exhibition is something special. You can spend hours exploring these whimsical sculptures. It’s a wonderful way to spend a day in San Diego. Remember the experience.
