A whisper of history brushes past you. The scent of salt and aged wood hangs heavy in the air. Before you stands the Olympias a majestic reconstruction of an ancient Athenian trireme.

This isn’t just a ship. It’s a time machine. It transports you back to a world of powerful navies and epic sea battles. The Olympias is a marvel of experimental archaeology. Built between 1985 and 1987 it’s a testament to human ingenuity and a deep fascination with the past. This commissioned ship of the Hellenic Navy is unique. It is the only commissioned vessel of its kind in any navy worldwide.

The Olympias was born from a collaboration. Historian J S Morrison and naval architect John F Coates worked tirelessly. They poured over ancient texts and archaeological evidence. Their discussions were so extensive that they became the longest correspondence ever recorded in The Times newspaper. The Classics teacher Charles Willink lent his expertise. Financial backing came from the Hellenic Navy and generous donors like Frank Welsh a banker writer and trireme enthusiast. They formed the Trireme Trust led by Professor Boris Rankov. The Trust’s work lives on in its archived documents at Wolfson College Cambridge.

Notice the bronze bow ram. A 200 kg copy of an original in the Piraeus Archaeological Museum. The ship itself is a masterclass in ancient shipbuilding. Douglas fir forms its frame with tenons of Virginia oak. Iroko hardwood provides a strong keel. Even the hypozomata the crucial bracing ropes tell a story. The original hemp ropes were impossible to replicate cost-effectively. So steel cables were used. Their tension fluctuated with the waves creating a risk of breakage. Protective measures were vital.

The Olympias has been tested extensively. In 1987 170 volunteer rowers propelled it to an impressive 9 knots. It executed 180-degree turns in under a minute within just two and a half ship-lengths. These results prove that Thucydides and other ancient historians were not exaggerating the triremes capabilities.

The Olympias has traveled extensively. In 1993 it sailed to Britain for celebrations marking 2500 years of democracy. In 2004 it carried the Olympic Flame. It moved ceremonially from Keratsini to Piraeus for the Athens Olympics.

Today the Olympias rests in a dry dock. It stands proudly at the Naval Tradition Park in Palaio Faliro Athens. It is a breathtaking exhibit. It is a visible reminder of Greece’s rich maritime heritage. In 2016 and 2018 it even carried passengers and amateur rowers on trips in the Saronic Gulf.

This isn’t merely a ship in a dry dock. It is a living piece of history. It represents the skill and ingenuity of ancient shipbuilders. It breathes life into the stories of those who once manned these powerful vessels. The Olympias stands as a symbol of a remarkable naval tradition. It represents one of the most important warships of the ancient Mediterranean world. It’s a legacy waiting to be explored.
