Contemplating a day filled with science and exploration? Then you’ve arrived at the right place. Welcome to the California Science Center.

Established in 1951, the California Science Center has been a beacon of scientific learning. Initially, it was known as the California Museum of Science and Industry. But in 1998, it was remodeled and reborn. Today, it stands as the West Coast’s largest hands-on science center.

The California Science Center operates through a unique public-private partnership. It is a collaboration between the State of California and the California Science Center Foundation. The California Natural Resources Agency plays an oversight role.

Step inside and prepare to be amazed. The California Science Center is home to many exhibits. Aircraft and spacecraft displays dot the landscape. The Space Shuttle Endeavour is a major draw. You will find multiple hands-on galleries. Special exhibitions rotate throughout the year. And don’t forget the captivating IMAX movies.

The museum’s story began long before 1951. It dates back to 1912. That’s when the first California State Exhibition building opened in Exposition Park. This site was once an agricultural fairground. The building showcased natural resources and industrial products.

In 1961, a new science wing made its debut. It featured “Mathematica: A World of Numbers… and Beyond”. This exhibit was sponsored by IBM. Charles and Ray Eames designed it. It visually demonstrated fundamental mathematical concepts.

In preparation for the 1984 Summer Olympics, the museum expanded. New exhibits on earthquakes and economics were added. An IMAX theatre was constructed. The opening and closing ceremonies were held nearby. They took place in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

In 1988, leaders started a 25-year master plan. This plan aimed to transform the museum into a science education facility. The original building closed in 1996 for the construction. Phase I was completed. The museum was officially renamed the California Science Center in 1998.

The California Science Center is constantly evolving. Phase II saw the opening of the Ecosystems exhibit in 2010. Guests can experience the natural world firsthand. In 2011, the Space Shuttle Endeavour arrived. Currently, Phase III is underway. The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is under construction.

General admission to the California Science Center is free. This includes access to permanent exhibition galleries. You can also see various demonstrations. Prominent aircraft and spacecraft are on display. However, there are charges for special exhibitions. IMAX films and certain activities also require tickets.

Don’t miss the permanent exhibits. Explore the World of Life. This exhibit examines life processes. Discover similarities among microscopic organisms. Journey through Ecosystems. This exhibit showcases wildlife and adaptation. See animals and aquariums. The Samuel Oschin Air and Space Center is an upcoming expansion. It promises to be spectacular.

The California Science Center is more than just a museum. It’s a place of learning and discovery. It is a place where curiosity is encouraged. With its ever-evolving exhibits, the California Science Center promises an enriching experience for all.
