A journey of discovery learning my way to my goal. This isn’t just a motto. It’s the heart of the Valentina-Tereschkowa-Grundschule. Right here in Chemnitz on Haydnstrasse 21.

Opened in early September 1962 this school welcomed its first students. A year later it received its inspiring name. Valentina Tereshkova the first woman in space. Think about that. A school dedicated to a pioneering woman. A testament to ambition and reaching for the stars.

Sadly much of the school’s early history is lost. Many valuable documents disappeared during restructuring. But the school is working hard to recover this history. They are reaching out to former students and teachers. Hoping to rebuild their archives. They even found wonderful old films. What a treasure trove that must be. If you have any memories or materials from the school’s past please share them.

The school’s dedication to its namesake isn’t just a name on a building. It permeates the school’s culture. The children are encouraged to explore learn and reach for their own goals. Just like Valentina. The school has a robust recycling program. Students collect tons of paper each year. The money raised helps fund class activities. Fourth graders even use their earnings for graduation trips. A great way to instill environmental responsibility and financial literacy.

The Valentina-Tereschkowa-Grundschule isn’t simply a place for learning. It’s a place for growth exploration and community. A vibrant institution built on the foundation of a pioneering spirit. A school where dreams take flight much like Valentina’s journey into space. This is more than a school. It’s a legacy.
