Standing proudly on Newmarket Road, a place of worship, its red brick facade has witnessed the ebb and flow of life in Windsor for over a century. This is Windsor Uniting Church, a beacon of faith and community in the heart of this inner city suburb.

It didn’t always stand tall and majestic on its present site. Born out of the Methodist Church, this place of worship started out humbly as a converted house on Nicholls Street in 1887, originally known as Swan Hill Mission, aptly named for its location near Breakfast Creek. But the church quickly grew, expanding its outreach in the community.

However, the great floods of 1893 left Swan Hill underwater, bringing a sense of urgency. The church needed a new location, a place of higher ground. In 1902, Windsor Methodist Church finally moved to its current location on Newmarket Road, its spire and steeple reaching towards the heavens. It was a move that was destined to shape the future of the church.

The church thrived, becoming a central hub of social and spiritual life for the people of Windsor. The church held Sunday School classes and gatherings, and it became a place of refuge during World War I. The church also hosted various organizations, including the Christian Endeavour and guilds for young men and women.

With the coming of the Uniting Church in Australia in 1977, the church formally adopted its current name: Windsor Uniting Church. And it continues to serve the people of Windsor to this day.

In 1918, lean-to wings were added at the rear of the church, and a room underneath was created to cater to the growing congregation, especially the needs of the Sunday School. Windsor Circuit was constituted in 1922, formally separating Windsor and Wilston churches from the Valley Circuit.

This is a church with a story to tell, whispering through its timeless bricks and intricate stained-glass windows. It stands as a symbol of resilience, compassion, and community. Take a moment to imagine the warmth and community that have pulsed through the hallowed halls of Windsor Uniting Church.
