Ever wonder how a piece of China found its way to the heart of Ho Chi Minh City? Today we are standing in front of the magnificent Chùa Thiên Hòa. It is more than just a temple. It is a story etched in stone and incense.

Chùa Thiên Hòa also known as Thien Hau Temple or Ba Temple is one of the oldest Chinese temples in Saigon. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of the Chinese community in Ho Chi Minh City.

Let’s step back to 1760. Chinese immigrants from Guangzhou Province built this sacred space. Imagine them crossing the seas. They carried their hopes their dreams and their faith. They built Chùa Thiên Hòa to honor Thien Hau the Lady of the Sea.

Thien Hau also known as Mazu is a beloved deity. Legend says she was born in Fujian China in 1044. She possessed extraordinary abilities. She could predict the weather and rescue seafarers. Her story is one of filial piety and selfless sacrifice.

One day her father and brothers were caught in a storm. While weaving fabric she spiritually rushed to save them. She saved her brothers but lost her father. Since then she has been worshiped as a protector of those at sea. The temple is not just a place of worship. It’s an architectural marvel.

Look closely. The structure resembles the Chinese character “khau” meaning mouth. It consists of four interconnected houses. These houses form the front middle and back halls. The open space or “thien tinh” allows sunlight and fresh air to flow through.

Notice the ceramic ornaments and reliefs. They depict scenes from 19th century China. Spot the dragons birds and people in elegant palaces. These intricate details tell stories of prosperity and good fortune.

Step inside the front hall. Here you will see altars dedicated to Phuc Duc Chanh Than and Mon Quan Vuong. Admire the stone stele illustrating Thien Hau’s journey on the waves.

In the central hall find the incense burner candle holders and lamps all made of bronze. These objects date back to 1886. They add to the solemn atmosphere. The back hall also known as Thien Hau Palace is the heart of the temple. Here Thien Hau Thanh Mau takes center stage. Her wooden statue stands about one meter tall. Kim Hoa Nuong and Long Mau Nuong Nuong flank her.

Look up. Hundreds of circle incense sticks hang from the roof. Worshipers light these incense sticks to send their prayers to the heavens. The fragrant smoke fills the air creating a peaceful ambiance.

Chùa Thiên Hòa houses approximately 400 antiques. Admire the horizontal lacquered boards parallel sentences and carved pictures. The pottery sculptures on the roof eaves walls and altars were made in China in 1908.

Every day people flock to Chùa Thiên Hòa to pray for luck and happiness. The temple is especially crowded on the 1st and 15th of each lunar month. Tet holidays and the Lady of the Sea’s Day are also popular.

The Lady of the Sea’s Day falls on the 23rd of the third lunar month. The day before they hold the Lady Bathing Ceremony. On the morning of the 23rd they organize the Lady Receiving Ceremony. A statue of Thien Hau Thanh Mau is placed in a palanquin and paraded around the temple. Lion and dragon dances accompany the procession.

Chùa Thiên Hòa stands as a symbol of Chinese gratitude. It represents their appreciation for Thien Hau’s support in their journey to new lands. It also shows her help in living and working in peace. It is a testament to the enduring power of faith and community.

In 1993 Chùa Thiên Hòa was recognized as a national architectural and artistic monument. This recognition solidifies its place as a cultural treasure in Ho Chi Minh City. As we leave Chùa Thiên Hòa take a moment to reflect on its rich history and spiritual significance.
