Imagine this: a cluster of small Buddhist temples. This is Inwangsa Temple. It is nestled on Inwangsan Mountain in the heart of Seoul.

Inwangsa Temple offers more than just religious solace. It gives a glimpse into Seoul’s history and culture. It is a key landmark that has silently witnessed the city’s evolution.

Inwangsa Temple refers to this collection of temples. They are on the eastern foot of Inwangsan Mountain. This location provides a cozy and tasteful atmosphere. The northern area named Mugye-dong adds to the beautiful scenery.

Inwangsa Temple was established in the early Joseon period. That was between 1392 and 1910. It served a vital purpose. The temple was built to guard the national palace, Gyeongbokgung.

Inwangsa Temple comprises eleven shrines. These shrines represent five different Buddhist orders. Each shrine’s unique design adds to the pleasure of hikers. They make their way up to Seonbawi. This unusual rock formation is a site of many folk beliefs and shamanist rites.

Inwangsan Mountain itself has a significant story. The mountain got its name from one of the guardian gods of Buddhism. People believed the mountain guarded the Joseon Dynasty. Interestingly, Inwangsan was once notorious for its tiger population. There was even an old saying. It said that no tiger in Joseon didn’t know its way around Inwangsan.

According to feng shui principles, Inwangsan was incorporated into the capital. It became the white tiger of the royal palace.

Standing at 338 meters, Inwangsan is made entirely of granite. While many celebrated mountains have multiple peaks, Inwangsan has just one. A typical hike to the summit and back takes about three hours.

Centuries ago, Joseon scholars gathered on Inwangsan. They mingled and conducted scholarly and cultural exchanges. Inwangsa was also a sacred spot for Buddhism and folk religions.

Jeong Seon, a famed Joseon artist, captured the mountain in a painting. It is titled Inwang jesaekdo. It shows Inwangsan Mountain after rain. Hiking up the valley today feels like walking straight into this painting.

Parts of Inwangsan were off-limits for decades. They reopened to the public in 2018. Now the mountain’s trails are a favorite among hikers.

As you explore Inwangsa Temple, take a moment. Think about the history, the beliefs, and the artistry. They are all woven into this sacred place. Let the tranquility of the temple and the beauty of the mountain inspire you.
