Is this the site of the legendary bravery of the Two Heroines? This, my friends, is the Thalang Victory Monument. It stands as a testament to the unwavering spirit of the Phuket people and their victory over Burmese invaders in 1785. The monument commemorates a pivotal moment in Phuket’s history. The Thalang Victory Monument depicts the triumph of the local people, led by two remarkable women, Chan and Muk. They were the widow and sister-in-law of the late governor. Faced with an impending invasion by a much larger Burmese force, Chan and Muk refused to yield. They rallied the people of Phuket, employing clever tactics and unwavering courage to defend their homeland. The sisters even disguised women as soldiers to swell the ranks, a ruse that successfully intimidated the Burmese. After a month-long siege, the Burmese, weakened and demoralized, retreated on March 13, 1785. This date is now celebrated annually as Thalang Victory Day. The monument, with its heroic figures cast in bronze, serves as a powerful reminder of their indomitable spirit. The Two Heroines are remembered as symbols of courage and patriotism. Their legacy continues to inspire generations.
