Here in front of me is Byparken. This public park in central Roskilde has a fascinating history. It offers a green space between the cathedral and Roskilde Fjord.
Let’s step back in time. Imagine Roskilde in the Middle Ages. The area now known as Provstevænget was once St John’s Parish. St John’s Church stood here. It was home to many canons from Roskilde Cathedral.
In 1443, disaster struck. A fire engulfed Roskilde Cathedral. It spread quickly to the north and west. The area of Provstevænget was devastated. It was never rebuilt.
After the Reformation, Roskilde declined. Provstevænget became part of the Provost’s House. For centuries, it was used for grazing cattle.
Now, let’s jump to the late 19th century. In 1898, Roskilde received a large inheritance. The textile manufacturer Otto Henrich Schmeltz left the city a fortune. A portion was earmarked for a park. But there was a condition. The park could not be used for sports.
In 1915, the city acted. They used Schmeltz’s money to buy land. This land was north of Provstevænget. It had been farmland. The city hired landscape architect Aage Hansen to design the new park. Thus, Byparken was born.
Today, Byparken is a beloved spot. A thatched house sits within the park. This is Piper’s House, now a restaurant. The hill nearby hosts open-air concerts. Every Tuesday in July, music fills the air.
Byparken also features a stream. It flows into a lake in the northern part of the park. A reunification stone stands as a monument.
In July, Byparken comes alive. Gimle and Roskilde Kommune organize free concerts. For Sankt Hans, a bonfire blazes.
Byparken offers a place for relaxation. You can also find a playground here. It is a place to connect with nature.
