Rumors swirl around St. John’s Church. Some whisper of a school reborn. Others speak of a bishop’s grand vision. Let’s uncover the truth of St. John’s Church together. St. John’s Church stands on Shangxiang Street in Chengdu. It’s a Protestant church, a beacon of faith in Sichuan Province. Its story begins in 1909. William Cassels, one of the Cambridge Seven, acquired land near Xishuncheng Street. His initial purpose wasn’t a church. He envisioned Fu Jen School. The school thrived for years but closed its doors in 1926. Then, the transformation began. A chapel arose from the school’s remnants. In 1939, a second story graced the evolving structure. Fu Jen School became St. John’s Church. It served as the seat of the Anglican Bishop of West Szechwan, giving it cathedral status. Tragedy struck during World War II. Bombs rained down, scarring the church. Yet, the spirit of St. John’s endured. Restoration efforts breathed life back into the building. Services resumed, echoing with renewed faith. The year 1954 brought a new era. The Three-Self Patriotic Church, a state-sanctioned movement, absorbed St. John’s. This changed the church’s affiliations but not its essence. Progress demanded change in 1992. A street extension project necessitated the church’s demolition. However, from the rubble emerged a new vision. In 2011, St. John’s Church was reborn. A fusion of neo-Gothic and minimalist styles defined the new structure. Today, it holds the title of Chengdu’s largest Protestant church. St. John’s Church whispers tales of resilience. It’s a testament to faith’s ability to adapt and endure. A place where history and spirituality intertwine, inviting all to explore its rich tapestry.
