“Religion of the Lord of Heaven.” Do these words resonate with you? They encapsulate the essence of Catholicism in South Korea. Let’s explore Sohadong Catholic Church. This church stands as a testament to faith. It reflects the enduring spirit of the Catholic community in Seoul.

Sohadong Catholic Church is part of a larger story. That story began in Korea in 1784. Yi Seung-hun was baptized in China. He took the Christian name Peter. Returning to Korea, he brought religious texts. He then baptized many countrymen. The Church grew without formal missionary priests.

The 19th century was difficult. The Joseon dynasty targeted the Catholic Church. This was due to the Church’s opposition to ancestral worship. The state saw this worship as essential to Korean culture.

Despite persecution, the Church expanded. Thousands were martyred. Pope John Paul II canonized 103 martyrs in 1984. This included St. Andrew Taegon Kim. He was the first Korean priest. He was ordained in 1845 and martyred in 1846.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Korea was formed in 1831. By 1962, the Church had grown. It was then structured into three Metropolitan Provinces. Each had an Archdiocese. Each also had several suffragan Dioceses.

In 2023, the Catholic Church had almost six million adherents. This is over 11% of the South Korean population. Almost 5,000 priests and 9,000 nuns serve. They serve across 1,842 parishes.

South Korea has a unique position. It has the fourth-largest number of saints since 1984. This includes the Korean Martyrs.

Pope Francis visited South Korea in August 2014. He celebrated a Papal Mass at Myeongdong Cathedral. During another mass, he beatified 124 Korean Catholic martyrs.

Catholicism in South Korea embraces Confucian customs. These customs are part of Korean culture. South Korean Catholics practice ancestral rites. They observe Confucian philosophies. This blend creates a unique Catholic identity. Sohadong Catholic Church embodies this harmony. It links faith with cultural heritage. It connects the past with the present.
