Five hundred eighty-four souls rest here. At the Cimetière militaire allemand de Wicres Route de la Bassée. Each one a story untold until now.

This German military cemetery stands as a poignant reminder of World War I. Located southwest of Wicres village it sits beside the N41. It’s a place of quiet reflection. A place of profound loss.

The village of Wicres was occupied by German troops in late August 1914. It remained a battle zone until October 1918 when British forces finally took control. This cemetery was created in March 1915. Many of those buried here approximately 470 soldiers perished in the spring and autumn battles of 1915.

Even during the war a wall was built around the cemetery. A huge cross stood in the center. It was the work of sculptor Otto Richter. The Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge began work on the grounds between the wars. They planted trees. Following a 1966 Franco-German agreement on war graves they finalized the cemetery’s design. In 1979 old wooden crosses were replaced. New stone crosses now bear the names and dates of those buried there.

The cemetery contains individual graves. 584 German soldiers lie here. Thirty remain unidentified. Each stone is a testament to a life cut short. A life lost amidst the chaos of war.

Think of the young men who lie beneath these stones. Imagine their hopes and dreams their families left behind. This quiet place speaks volumes. It speaks of loss. It speaks of sacrifice. It speaks of a war that changed the world forever. It speaks of the enduring legacy of the Cimetière militaire allemand de Wicres Route de la Bassée. A solemn reminder of the price of war. A place of peace in the midst of history’s turmoil.
