Did the De Viron family know they were building a real-life calendar when they commissioned their castle? Here at De Viron Castle, time isn’t just told, it’s built into the very structure. De Viron Castle isn’t just a beautiful landmark in Dilbeek, it’s a testament to the ingenuity of its architect, Jean-Pierre Cluysenaar. He designed this neo-Tudor masterpiece in 1862 for Théodore de Viron. The castle stands on the grounds of a medieval predecessor, the Chateau de Sainte-Alène. A lone tower, the Alenatoren, still whispers tales of Saint Alena’s prayers from that older structure. De Viron Castle itself is a whimsical blend of architectural styles. The design incorporates neo-Renaissance, neo-Gothic, and neo-Tudor elements. It boasts a rather unique feature. The castle embodies the Julian calendar. There are 365 windows, representing the days of the year. The 52 doors symbolize the weeks. Twelve towers mark the months. Seven staircases stand for the days of the week. And a single main entrance represents the year itself. The de Viron family occupied the castle until 1912. During World War I, German forces took hold of it. Later, in 1923, the family sold De Viron Castle to the municipality of Dilbeek. It then served as the town hall, continuing its legacy of service. Take a moment to appreciate the castle’s fairytale charm, its vertical lines reaching towards the sky. Notice the interplay of brick, blue stone, and white sandstone, all contributing to its picturesque appeal. Even the distinctive pear-shaped roofs of the four corner towers add to the castle’s grandeur. This isn’t just a castle, it’s a living calendar. De Viron Castle, a place where architecture and time intertwine to tell a unique story.
