Isn’t it intriguing that an airport could embody over a century of history? Today, we stand at the grounds of what once was Beijing Nanjiao Airport. It is also known as New Nanyuan Airport during its construction. It is adjacent to Beijing Daxing Airport.
Beijing Nanjiao Airport opened its doors late September 2019. The opening marked a significant moment in Beijing’s aviation history. It coincided with the closure of the original Nanyuan Airport.
Nanyuan Airport, established in 1910, holds the title of China’s oldest airport. For over a century, it witnessed pivotal moments. It saw China transform through wars and revolutions. Nanyuan became a joint military-civilian airport. It primarily served China United Airlines. It facilitated travel for millions.
Nanyuan Airport played a key role in Chinese aviation. In 1913, China’s first official flying academy was established there. This academy trained over 100 pilots. They played important roles in China’s aviation history.
Even the Forbidden City experienced the airport’s influence. In 1917, an aircraft from Nanyuan bombed the Forbidden City. This event marked a unique moment in the city’s history.
After 1945, Nanyuan Airport became vital to the Nationalist government. Important figures boarded flights from here. In 1948, the People’s Liberation Army took control. Nanyuan supported air and ground force training.
In 1986, China United Airlines began operating from Nanyuan. It turned the airbase into its main hub. The airport saw significant growth. In 2008, passenger numbers increased by 80.1%. In 2013, a new terminal opened. It had a capacity of six million passengers.
However, change was on the horizon. Beijing Nanjiao Airport emerged as its successor. The original Nanyuan Airport closed to civil operations on September 25, 2019. The new Daxing International Airport took over.
The last flight, China United Airlines KN5830, departed Nanyuan. The airport transitioned to a People’s Liberation Army Air Force airbase. It remained operational until late September 2019. Then, Beijing Nanjiao Airport opened.
Beijing Nanjiao Airport carries the legacy of its predecessor. Nanyuan is planned to become an aviation museum. It ensures its stories will endure. The new airport is ready to support military operations. It marks a new chapter in Beijing’s aviation narrative.
